Marianne Ignace is a distinguished professor in the Department of Linguistics and Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University, where she also serves as the Director of SFU’s Indigenous Languages Program at the Nations Language Centre. Her academic work focuses on the intersection of language, culture, and history, with specific research interests in Nations Narrative Oral History, Ethnoecology, and the languages of Aboriginal Peoples in Northwestern North America. Ignace has authored comprehensive works, including the 'Practical Grammar of Ts’msyen Sm’algyax' co-authored with Margaret Anderson, and has been involved in various projects related to Indigenous language planning and curriculum development. She has a strong background in ethnobotany and has contributed significantly to the documentation and revitalization of Indigenous languages through SSHRC partnership grants. Ignace is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and was awarded the Governor General’s Innovation Award in 2019.
