Dr. Morgan Opie

Assistant Professor

Biography

Morgan Opie is an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University with a strong focus on homotopy theory and its applications in geometry and topology. Her research primarily centers on (unstable) topological vector bundles, utilizing tools from homotopy theory to explore related mathematical problems. Additionally, she has a keen interest in the homotopical aspects of algebraic geometry, particularly in the field of motivic homotopy theory and algebraic vector bundles. Opie has worked on various topics concerning abstract homotopy theory and its applications, including leveraging homotopy theory within graph theory and homotopy type theory. Prior to her current appointment, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA as an NSF postdoc, mentoring under the supervision of Michael J. Hopkins. She earned her PhD from Harvard University in 2021 and previously obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she wrote an honors thesis under the guidance of Jenia Tevelev. Opie began her academic journey at Cape Cod Community College, showcasing her long-standing dedication to mathematics and research.
