Dr. Robin Ciardullo

Professor

Biography

Robin Ciardullo is an observational astronomer whose research interests span cosmology, the history of the universe, local phenomena, planetary nebulae, globular clusters, and novae. Currently, he is involved in programs to measure the physical properties of high-redshift emission-line galaxies, which aims to improve our understanding of the evolution of post-asymptotic giant branch stars and to re-examine the use of the planetary nebula luminosity function for extragalactic distance measurements. He completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1986. Ciardullo has been a faculty member at Penn State University since 1990, where he serves on various national committees, including the Gemini Telescope Science Advisory Committee and the Users Committee of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories, where he has also been the chair. Presently, he is the Observing Manager for the Hobby Eberly Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and is a member of four HETDEX science working groups, as well as the Hundred Square Degree Narrow-Band (ODIN) survey, focusing on Lyα galaxies.
