Nate Foster is a Professor in the Department of Computer and Communication Sciences at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and a Visiting Researcher at Jane Street. His research focuses on programming languages and their applications in networking, databases, and security. He has a strong interest in language design, semantics, type systems, and mechanized proof, dedicating significant effort to crafting tools and languages that address challenges in computer networks. Throughout his career, Nate has contributed to advancing the field through both theoretical and practical explorations of programming languages. He has published extensively and has been recognized as an ACM Fellow through his influential work. His group is currently working on various projects that connect reinforcement learning with network security and the formal foundations of programmable data planes. Nate’s notable achievements include winning the 2025 ACM SIGCOMM Networking Systems Award and recognition for his papers at leading conferences.
