Dr. Daniela Fera

Associate Professor

Biography

Daniela Fera is an Associate Professor and Department Chair at Swarthmore College, specializing in Chemistry and Biochemistry. She completed her B.A. in Chemistry with Honors and Mathematics at New York University and went on to earn her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. Fera then pursued a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Molecular Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Her research group focuses on the structural biochemical characterization of antibody complexes and kinases, aiming to understand the development of antibodies against viruses and their roles in the immune system. The lab employs various biochemical techniques, including X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy, to investigate complexes of molecules. Fera's recent publications explore topics like the structural updates of neutralizing epitopes and immune pressures imposed by HIV. She teaches multiple courses in biological chemistry and is dedicated to guiding students in research projects that merge biochemistry studies with practical applications related to vaccine and therapy development.
