Andrew Beam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with secondary appointments in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Newborn Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His research applies machine-learning methods to extract meaningful insights from clinical and biological datasets. A recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Dr. Beam works on medical artificial intelligence. Prior to his academic position, he was a Senior Fellow at Flagship Pioneering and the founding head of machine learning at VL56, where he focused on using machine learning to improve the engineering of proteins. He earned his PhD in 2014 from North Carolina State University, where he worked on Bayesian neural networks, and holds multiple degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Statistics. He completed postdoctoral fellowship in Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Beam's research group is committed to improving decision-making in healthcare through quantitative, data-driven methods and focuses on developing predictive models for neonatal care using deep learning techniques.
