Prof. Ryan Shosted is an experimental phonetician and phonologist whose research focuses on the phonetic principles that shape the phonological, typological, and diachronic outcomes of languages. He specializes in speech production through the lens of acoustics, kinematics, and aerodynamics. Currently, he employs ultrafast dynamic magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the physiological mappings of the vocal tract and the acoustic signals that emanate from it. His work aims to develop models of speech production based on data drawn from typologically and geographically diverse languages, particularly those that are understudied or endangered. Additionally, he gains insights into historical sound change by studying various writing systems, including Hittite cuneiform and the Deseret Alphabet.
