Biography

Gary R. Hilderbrand is the Peter Louis Hornbeck Professor of Practice in Landscape Architecture and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he has taught since 1990. He is the founding principal of Reed Hilderbrand LLC in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is known for significant works of landscape architecture across various distinguished sites such as the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. Hilderbrand has advocated for urban forests and authored the 'Healthy Forest, Healthy City: Cambridge Urban Forest Plan.' His current projects include positioning New York City’s Lever House and major interventions at Storm King Art Center. He has published extensively in landscape architecture and is the author of several monographs, including 'Making Landscape Continuity' and 'Visible|Invisible: Landscape Works of Reed Hilderbrand.' Hilderbrand's practice has received over 100 awards, and he was recognized as one of the top 25 design educators by Design Intelligence in 2019. He has held numerous fellowships, including the Mellon Practicing Senior Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Alumnae Association in 2021. His contributions to landscape architecture continue to influence current practices and education.
