Matthew J Major is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. His research focuses on applying engineering principles and statistical models to assess musculoskeletal health outcomes and postural control in individuals with musculoskeletal and neurological impairments. He investigates the sensorimotor mechanisms that underlie postural control in patient groups with functional impairments, integrating mechanical characterization of prostheses and orthoses with numerical simulations and in-vivo testing to better understand the relationships between device properties and health performance outcomes. Additionally, he is involved in the development of user-centered assistive devices to optimize therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing user function and quality of life. Dr. Major serves as the Director of the Prosthetics Orthotics Rehabilitation Technology Assessment Laboratory (PORTAL) and the NU Prosthetics-Orthotics Center (NUPOC).
