Biography

Edith Luhanga joined CMU-Africa as a postdoctoral researcher in June 2021 and transitioned to assistant research professor in September 2022. She previously served as a lecturer at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Tanzania. Luhanga holds a Ph.D. in Information Science from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan, an MSc in Advanced Computing Science, and a BEng (Hons) in Electronic Computer Engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK. She is the deputy project leader for a ten-year initiative aimed at capacity building in digital technologies at NM-AIST, and represented Tanzania at the UNESCO intergovernmental committee that drafted recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence in 2021. Luhanga has contributed to various research projects, including those focusing on human-centric AI to advance maternal health and digital financial inclusion in African countries.
