James Stockard is a lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Design specializing in Urban Planning and Design. He has a rich background in affordable housing and community development, having served as the curator of the Loeb Fellowship for 17 years until his retirement in 2014. Despite retiring, he continues to teach housing courses at the GSD and acts as the Academic Career Liaison for Career Services, assisting planning students with their career paths and connecting them with potential employers. For over 25 years, he was the principal of Stockard & Engler & Brigham, a Cambridge-based consulting firm focused on affordable housing development, property management, and neighborhood revitalization while also addressing local, state, and national housing policy issues. Prior to joining GSD, Mr. Stockard served as a court-appointed Special Master for the Department of Public and Assisted Housing in Washington, DC. He has also taught courses on housing policy at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning and at Tufts University. Additionally, he is a co-author of 'Managing Affordable Housing' and wrote the epilogue for 'New Directions in Urban Public Housing.'
