Biography

Harold Hongju Koh is a Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School, where he has been teaching since 1985. He served as the 22nd Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State from 2009 to 2013 and was Dean of the Yale Law School from 2004 to 2009. Throughout his career, Professor Koh has been recognized as one of the leading experts in public and private international law, national security law, and human rights. He has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the field, including 18 honorary degrees and over 30 awards for his work in human rights. His publications include nine books and more than 200 articles. Koh has also served in significant roles such as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor from 1998 to 2001 and held clerkships with Justice Harry Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court and Judge Malcolm Richard Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He is a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford.
