Peter Butler is a nationally recognized health care executive with over 40 years of experience in teaching hospitals and health care systems. He is the immediate past president of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, where he currently serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Health Systems Management. This department is home to a master's program in health care administration that is ranked 5th in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Before joining Rush in 2002, he served as the president and chief executive officer of the Methodist Hospital System (now Houston Methodist) in Houston, Texas, and as senior vice president and chief administrative officer at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Additionally, he has been the past Chairman of the Board for the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and served on various boards including the Health Research and Education Trust and the Michigan Hospital Association. He has chaired multiple councils for the American Hospital Association and was appointed as a member of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC). In 2016, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Rush University. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Amherst College and a Master of Health Services Administration degree from the University of Michigan.
