Dr. Isabelle Lavoie

Associate Professor

Biography

Isabelle Lavoie is an Associate Professor at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique, where she contributes to the field of freshwater ecosystem monitoring. Her expertise encompasses biomonitoring, biofilms, diatoms, ecotoxicology, paleolimnology, and urban limnology. Prof. Lavoie’s research centers on the use of biological indicators to assess the health of aquatic ecosystems, particularly focusing on river biofilms and their responses to human-induced disturbances such as urbanization, agriculture, and mining activities. She played a significant role in developing the Eastern Canada Diatom Index, a water biological integrity assessment tool used widely across various water management organizations in Quebec and Ontario, as well as by the Government of Canada and other stakeholders. Lavoie aims to advance the understanding of bioindicators and biomarkers that reflect the impacts of human disturbances on the nutritional quality of biofilms and their implications for the food chain.
