Dr. Tim Byrnes

Associate Professor

Biography

Tim Byrnes is an Associate Professor of Physics at NYU Shanghai and a member of the NYU Global Network. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, in 2003, where he focused on condensed matter physics and high energy physics under the supervision of Prof. Chris Hamer. Dr. Byrnes has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo, Japan. His research interests encompass quantum information technologies, condensed matter physics, and atomic, molecular, and optical physics. He is particularly interested in the applications of Bose-Einstein condensates for quantum information. Throughout his career, he has worked on various aspects of quantum simulation and solving lattice gauge theories in the context of quantum computing. His research contributions include theory on Bose-Einstein condensation in exciton-polariton systems and crossovers between Bose-Einstein condensates and BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) states, and his extensive publication record demonstrates his engagement with high-impact research in his field.
