Dr. Ion Meyn

Associate Professor

Biography

Ion Meyn teaches areas of civil criminal procedure, civil rights, and race law. His scholarship examines the constructs of the criminal legal system and how they maintain racial and class hierarchies. His research particularly addresses the police use of force. His work has appeared in several prestigious law reviews including Fordham Law Review, William & Mary Law Review, Indiana Law Journal, Arizona Law Review, Wisconsin Law Review, Brooklyn Law Review, and the American Journal of Criminal Law. Additionally, he serves as the Reporter for the American Bar Association's Diversion Standards and is the Co-Chair of the ABA Criminal Justice Section's Academic Committee. On behalf of the ABA, he served as an observer in the trial of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri at Guantanamo. He has also served as an expert in litigation involving California's Racial Justice Act. Professor Meyn has clerked for Sixth Circuit Judge Bernice Donald and interned for California Supreme Court Justice Ming Chin. He has contributed to public discussions on criminal procedure, criminal law, and policing, appearing on CNN, NPR, Bloomberg, Fox6 News, KCBS, and Wisconsin Public Radio, and has written for NBC, Lawfare, and the Wisconsin State Journal, among other outlets. Furthermore, he has been quoted in several major publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Newsweek, Washington Post, and Associated Press. Previously, he litigated business election law disputes in California, worked on behalf of the Wisconsin State Public Defender, and served as a supervising attorney for the Wisconsin Innocence Project, leading teams that secured exonerations in homicide cases.
