Dr. Markus Bitzer

Professor

Biography

Dr. Markus Bitzer is a Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School, specializing in Internal Medicine with a focus on nephrology. His research concentrates on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying glomerular diseases. His work often employs experimental model systems to explore kidney disease mechanisms and identify intervention targets for patients with complex ailments affecting kidney function. His key research interests include glomerular diseases, diabetic kidney disease, and aging-related alterations in kidney structure and function, particularly the role of Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-beta) in regulating kidney pathology. Dr. Bitzer's lab uses systems biology approaches to interrogate kidney organ tissues from patients in early stages of kidney disease, helping characterize the molecular networks that pertain to disease progression. He is also engaged in observational cohorts and biobanking projects such as the C-PROBE and PRECISE studies. His prolific research output includes numerous peer-reviewed publications that have contributed significantly to the field of nephrology and renal pathology.
