Dr. Paula Maust

Biography

Paula Maust is a performer, scholar, and educator dedicated to fusing research with creative practice to amplify underrepresented voices. She is the creator of the project 'Expanding the Music Theory Canon,' which is an extensive open-source collection of music theory examples by women and/or individuals of color. This resource addresses the magnitude and scope of concepts covered in the undergraduate core music theory curriculum. Her book based on this project is set to be released in December 2023 by SUNY Press. Paula has collaborated with Auralia & Musition to curate a collection of digital worksheets that accompany her book. Her research interests focus on early modern women musicians and their contributions to the development of Western classical music as composers, performers, patrons, and teachers. She serves as an area editor for Oxford University Press’s revision of Grove Music Online on women, gender, and sexuality, and has lectured on various topics related to women’s musical activities at several prestigious universities. In addition to her academic work, Paula performs extensively as a chamber musician in the Washington, D.C. area.
