Dr. Jason Kwan

Associate Professor

Biography

Jason Kwan is an Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin. His research focuses on the discovery of natural products, which are small molecules produced by living organisms, and their applications in drug development and biology. A significant aspect of his research involves exploring the marine environment, known for its unmatched biodiversity, to identify new natural products and their biosynthetic pathways. Kwan's work emphasizes the role of symbiotic bacteria in the production of natural products, especially those derived from marine invertebrates. He uses innovative techniques, such as shotgun metagenomics, to investigate these relationships and further understand the ecological significance of natural products. Jason holds a Master of Pharmacy degree from the University of Bath and a PhD from the University of Florida, where he studied under Hendrik Luesch. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Utah before joining the faculty in 2013.
