Biography

Robert Melton is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Penn State University. He has an extensive background in astrodynamics, vehicle dynamics, and controls, with a focus on spacecraft design and trajectory optimization. His academic journey began with a BS in Physics from Wake Forest University, followed by an MS and PhD in Physics and Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia. Melton has made significant contributions to the field through his research and publications, which include numerous journal articles on topics such as impulse thrust maneuvers and optimal docking maneuvers. He has been recognized for his academic excellence and contributions to aerospace engineering, earning awards such as the Milton S. Eisenhower Award for distinguished teaching and the Dirk Brouwer Award from the American Astronautical Society. As an elected Full Member of the International Academy of Astronautics, Melton plays a significant role in advancing space technology and education. He has served on various committees and has been actively involved in curriculum development and governance at Penn State.
