Dr. Tim Bugni

Professor

Biography

Tim Bugni is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin, specializing in marine natural products chemistry and drug discovery. His research focuses on the chemistry of natural products derived from symbiotic microorganisms, with an emphasis on the utilization of metabolomics and NMR-MS for structure elucidation. Bugni's work seeks to address significant challenges in discovering novel natural products from microbial sources, especially those that are cultivated from under-explored niches such as marine invertebrates. By utilizing advanced bacterial cultivation techniques and metabolomic approaches, his research aims to identify new therapeutics, particularly targeting areas such as cancer, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. Tim holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Montana Tech and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, where he conducted research under the supervision of Professor Chris M. Ireland. He has also completed a postdoctoral appointment at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and worked as a research assistant professor at the University of Utah before joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin in 2009.
