Dr. Chewning received the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy national Dawson Award for Excellence in Patient Care Research. Her research areas include social determinants of health, patient communications, and medication use experiences. Her work addresses patient perspectives, shared decision-making, dissemination and implementation studies, and comparative effectiveness outcomes, aiming to improve patient-provider communication and health outcomes in diverse communities. She has served as the founding director of the Sonderegger Research Center (SRC) for over 30 years, focusing on Social Administrative Pharmacy research. Dr. Chewning has collaborated with stakeholders including American Indian, Latinx, African American, and Muslim communities. She has conducted significant research projects, receiving substantial funding, and has mentored many students who have achieved notable awards for their research. She also teaches courses in effective pharmacist communication and leads graduate seminars. Alongside her teaching duties, she participates in various committees at the university, including the School of Pharmacy Curriculum Committee and the Interprofessional Education Committee.
