Biography

Emad Atiq's research spans topics in legal philosophy, ethics, and epistemology. He primarily engages with questions about the nature of law, the rule of law, and evaluates different legal systems through a common yardstick. His work addresses theoretical disagreements among legal officials and the role of moral principles in historical legal practices. Atiq has published numerous articles and is the author of a volume titled 'Contemporary Non-Positivism' published by Cambridge University Press. Beyond jurisprudence, his interests include private law theory, negligence, standards of proof, and normative reasoning in law. He is currently working on a major project focusing on epistemic virtues, like objectivity and intellectual courage, and their moral counterparts such as impartiality. Atiq defends the idea that perceptual awareness provides a unique form of knowledge through empathy, enhancing our understanding of experiences. His research also examines foundational issues in meta-normative theory, particularly regarding moral knowledge and the implications of expressivist accounts of moral thought and the relationship between normative and non-normative domains. His articles have appeared in esteemed journals including Noûs, Philosophical Studies, NYU Law Review, and many others.
