Associate Professor

Biography

Eric Bellm is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Washington. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2011, and a B.A. in Physics and Astronomy from Harvard College in 2005. His primary research focuses on the development of major portions of new optical time-domain surveys, specifically the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Bellm's primary research interest involves utilizing the extensive optical variability datasets produced to identify rare compact binaries. He employs the ARC 3.5m telescopes to track transient variable objects discovered through ZTF. He has also taught various courses, including ASTR 597: Topics in Observational Astrophysics during the Winter 2023 term.
