Elias Gerrick is an Assistant Professor in the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago, focusing on microbiology and the intricate relationships within gut microbiota. His research investigates how diet influences microbiota and the interactions among various microbial communities, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protists. Notably, his work emphasizes the critical role of protists in the microbiota, elucidating their impact on host immunity and overall health. Preceding his current appointment, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Microbiology at Stanford University after earning his Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.S. from the University of California, Irvine. Gerrick aims to advance our understanding of how commensal protists shape intestinal environments, contributing to health innovations.
