Biography

Maggie Gardner is a scholar specializing in civil procedure and international law, focusing on how U.S. courts handle cases involving foreign parties and foreign law. She is the founding editor of the Transnational Litigation Blog and has published scholarship on international litigation in prestigious journals such as the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Virginia Law Review, NYU Law Review, and Stanford Law Review. Her research interests include judicial decision-making from the perspective of U.S. district court judges. Recognized as a dedicated teacher, Professor Gardner was elected Class of 2024 commencement speaker and received the Anne Lukingbeal Award from the Cornell Women’s Law Coalition in 2023. Before joining Cornell's faculty, she was a Climenko Fellow and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, where she was the inaugural recipient of the HLS Student Government Teaching and Advising Award in 2016. Prior to her academic career, she practiced litigation as an appellate associate at WilmerHale LLP in Washington, D.C., and clerked for Judge Sandra L. Lynch on the U.S. Court of Appeals and Judge Michael H. Simon on the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon. Professor Gardner completed a year-long fellowship at the Appeals Chamber of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon under the direction of President Antonio Cassese. She graduated cum laude from Harvard College and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, serving as Supervising Editor of the Harvard Law Review.
