Biography

Abi Hassen has an extensive background in criminal defense, social movements, protest law, and organized labor. His scholarship employs political philosophy as a tool to interrogate the institutional, constitutional, and ideological dynamics of legal-social systems. His teaching interests reflect his background in civil liberties, criminal law, technology, and philosophy. At Penn State Dickinson Law, Professor Hassen teaches courses such as Race, Law, Technology, Professional Responsibility, and Law Emergency Advocacy. Drawing from a decade of diverse experiences as an attorney, organizer, and educator, he was a partner and co-founder of a small practice focused on indigent federal criminal defense and co-founded the Black Movement-Law Project, a non-profit dedicated to rapid response legal support. Previously, he served as National Lawyers Guild Mass Defense Coordinator and as an organizer for UNITE, working at the forefront of civil liberties and protest legal support for labor organizing. Throughout his career, Abi has been committed to educating lawyers, union members, and protesters on a broad variety of topics, including digital surveillance, constitutional rights, police encounters, and civil disobedience. His research includes projects that utilize political philosophy and historical analysis to investigate the criminal system's influence on the rule of law and explore the constitutional understanding of the criminal jury from a democratic theory perspective. Abi is also an experienced public speaker and popular educator, having given lectures, CLEs, and conducted training sessions at academic conferences, law schools, universities, and the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
