Dr. Daniel Stein

Professor

Biography

Daniel Stein is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at New York University. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University in 1979, following a Master’s degree in Physics from the same institution in 1977, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Brown University in 1975. His primary research interests lie in theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly focusing on statistical mechanics. Specifically, his work addresses issues surrounding randomness and disorder in condensed matter systems, with an emphasis on magnetic materials and stochastic processes that lead to rare nucleation events. He has contributed significantly to the field, including influential publications exploring predictability in zero-temperature Ising dynamics and fluctuation bounds in spin glasses. He has published multiple papers and a book, thus establishing himself as a prominent figure in his research area.
