Biography

Pierre Tarres is the Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives at NYU Shanghai and co-director of the NYU-ECNU Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He is also a Professor of Mathematics at NYU Shanghai and a Global Network Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Tarres plays a key role in shaping the university's research strategy and is involved in the development of graduate programs and fostering interdisciplinarity. He holds a Master’s in Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematics from École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay. His academic career includes significant positions such as Research Director at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris and Associate Professor at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on self-interacting random processes, particularly reinforced random walks, and their connections to stochastic algorithms and game theory. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Leverhulme Prize in 2006 and the Prix des Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré in 2008.
