Biography

Robert Bennett has been a member of the faculty at the Northwestern University School of Law since 1969 and served as the dean of the school from 1985 to 1995. In 2002, he was appointed the Nathaniel L. Nathanson Professor of Law. Professor Bennett teaches courses in American democracy, contracts, legislation, constitutional law, and constitutional theory. He has also served as a visiting professor at several prestigious law schools including the University of Illinois College of Law and the University of Virginia School of Law. Bennett is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has held the position of president from 1992 to 1994. He is a member of the American Law Institute since 1979 and co-founded the Chicago Council of Lawyers, serving as its president. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including "Talking Puzzles American Democracy" (2002) and "Taming Electoral College" (2006). His work on constitutional interpretation includes a co-authored book titled "Originalism and Living Constitutionalism" published by Cornell University Press. Bennett graduated summa cum laude with a BA from Harvard University in 1962 and received his LLB cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1965. He has been recognized with the Knox Memorial Fellowship for his studies at the London School of Economics and has had a diverse career including practicing law and serving as a legal assistant with the Federal Communications Commission.
