Sonia Tiquia-Arashiro is a Professor in the Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she has been a faculty member since 2003. She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology from the University of Hong Kong, obtained in 1997. With over 20 years of experience as an environmental microbiologist, Dr. Tiquia-Arashiro's research focuses on urbanization's impact on environmental health, microorganisms in urban rivers, and the ecological and physiological roles of microbes in different ecosystems. She utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to investigate microbial processes across aquatic and terrestrial systems, emphasizing applied components for public interest in environmental issues. Throughout her career, she has authored 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has published five books, including titles concerning microbial ecological technologies and extremophiles. Dr. Tiquia-Arashiro is recognized for her efforts in engaging students and the public in addressing water quality issues, particularly those that stem from urbanization, and she serves as a regional editor for the journal Environmental Technology.
