Biography

Katharine T. Bartlett is the Kenneth Pye Professor Emerita at Duke University School of Law. She served as Dean of Duke Law School from 2000 to 2007 and has extensive teaching experience in family law, employment discrimination law, gender law, and contracts. Bartlett has published widely in the fields of family law, gender theory, employment law, theories of social change, and legal education. She co-authored a leading casebook in gender law with Deborah Rhode. Additionally, she served as a reporter for the American Law Institute’s Principles of Law of Family Dissolution, focusing on child custody provisions. Prior to joining Duke, she clerked for the California Supreme Court and worked as a legal services attorney in Oakland, California. She has also been a visiting professor at UCLA and Boston University, and was a scholar in residence at both New York University School of Law and Columbia Law School. Bartlett has been recognized with numerous honors throughout her career, including the University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award from Duke University in 1994 and the Dean John R. Kramer Award for her leadership in public service legal education in 2006. In 2008, she received an honorary doctorate from Wheaton College.
