Dr. Farida Sohrabji

Professor

Biography

Dr. Farida Sohrabji is a Regents Professor and Department Head in the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine. Her research primarily focuses on neuroendocrinology and neuroinflammation, particularly in relation to aging and ischemic stroke. With 15 years of dedicated work in the field, her studies explore both the acute and chronic impacts of ischemic stroke and the associated risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Dr. Sohrabji has noted that stroke risk increases significantly in aging populations, particularly among women who are more likely to experience long-term disability and related neuropsychiatric issues. Utilizing preclinical models, her team investigates the pathophysiological changes in the blood-brain barrier and the roles of central and peripheral inflammation, as well as the long-term consequences of these changes on reward pathways, post-stroke depression, and dementia. She is also pioneering research on the effects of gut microbiome health on brain health, suggesting a strong link between gut health and neurological outcomes. Passionate about women's health, Dr. Sohrabji founded the Women's Health Neuroscience Program to foster research collaboration in gender medicine and advocate for the recognition of sex differences in medical research and treatment protocols.
