Biography

Michael Ashley Stein is a co-founder and the Executive Director of the Harvard Law School Project on Disability. He is recognized as one of the world's leading experts in disability law and policy and has played a significant role in drafting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. His work involves collaboration with disabled peoples' organizations and non-governmental organizations worldwide, and he advises various UN bodies and national human rights institutions on disability laws and policies. Professor Stein has received numerous accolades for his transformative work in the field, including the National Order of Merit from Ecuador, the USICD Dole/Harkin Award, the Morton E. Ruderman Prize, the Henry Viscardi Achievement Award, the ABA Paul G. Hearne Award, and the Harvard University Excellence in Inclusion Faculty Award. With over 288 academic publications and 11 books to his name, his scholarship appears in leading journals and academic presses and has been supported by several prestigious fellowships. At Harvard, he teaches at both the Law School and the Kennedy School of Government. He also holds an Extraordinary Professorship at the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Human Rights, and has earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
