Biography

Sascha Meinrath is the Palmer Chair in Telecommunications at Penn State University and the director of X-Lab, an innovative think tank focusing on the intersection of vanguard technologies and public policy. He is a renowned technology policy expert, recognized for his contributions over the past decades as a community internet pioneer, social entrepreneur, and angel investor. In 2012, he was elected an Ashoka Fellow for Social Entrepreneurship and has been named one of Time Magazine's 'Tech 40' influential figures in technology and Newsweek's 'Top 100' in the Digital Power Index. As a regular columnist for the Christian Science Monitor, Meinrath is widely published in several academic and media outlets, including Critical Studies in Media Communications, International Journal of Communications, and Foreign Policy. Before founding X-Lab, he served as vice president at the New America Foundation and founded the Open Technology Institute in 2008, which built one of the largest public interest tech policy organizations in Washington, D.C. His work includes the Commotion Wireless Project, focusing on empowering communities to build their own communication infrastructure and the founding of Measurement Lab, a platform for researchers to deploy Internet measurement tools. Sascha is a vocal public intellectual and a leading voice in policy debates on governmental accountability, especially concerning cybersecurity and privacy issues.
