Aaron Bowman is a Professor and the Head of the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University, and a member of the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience (PIIN). His research leverages a combination of molecular genetics, pharmacology, biochemistry, and developmental biology to explore the role of gene-environment interactions in metal exposure and neurodegenerative diseases. He utilizes an array of model systems, including patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), neuronal cultures, and mouse models to elucidate mechanisms of neuronal dysfunction and to characterize the molecular function of disease-associated genes in relation to environmental toxicants. His lab has been applying iPSC technology for over a decade, establishing protocols to generate iPSC lines and differentiate neural lineages. The long-term aim of his research is to use a personalized medicine approach to investigate patient-specific vulnerabilities to toxicants, develop neuroprotective strategies, and understand the long-term effects of environmental exposures on neurological health. Dr. Bowman has received numerous honors, including the Outstanding New Environmental Scientist Award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. He is also an Associate Editor for journals such as Toxicological Sciences and NeuroToxicology.
