Biography

Aaron L. Friedberg is a Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. He has taught since 1987 and co-directs the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs’ Center for International Security Studies. Friedberg served as a non-resident senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and as a senior advisor at the National Bureau for Asian Research. He is the author of 'Weary Titan: Britain’s Experience of Relative Decline, 1895-1905' and 'Shadow Garrison State: America’s Anti-Statism and Grand Strategy during the Cold War', published by Princeton University Press. Friedberg co-edited the volumes of the National Bureau for Asian Research's annual 'Strategic Asia' series. His book, 'Contest for Supremacy: China, America, and the Struggle for Mastery in Asia', was published in 2011 by W.W. Norton and translated into Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. His recent monograph, 'Air-Sea Battle: Debate on U.S. Military Strategy in Asia', published in 2014, is part of the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Adelphi Paper series. Friedberg's articles and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, and Foreign Affairs. He has been a research fellow at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the Norwegian Nobel Institute, and the Smithsonian Institution's Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. From June 2003 to June 2005, he served as Deputy Assistant for National Security Affairs in the office of the Vice President. Friedberg has also received an AB in 1978 and a PhD in 1986 from Harvard University, and is a member of the editorial boards of 'Joint Forces Quarterly' and 'Journal of Strategic Studies'.
