Biography

Abbas El Gamal is the Hitachi America Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University and a Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He received his B.Sc. Honors degree in 1972 from Cairo University, followed by an M.S. in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1977 and 1978, respectively. Before joining Stanford, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California in Electrical Engineering from 1978 to 1980. He has held several notable positions at Stanford, including Director of the Information Systems Laboratory from 2003 to 2012 and Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2012 to 2017. His research contributions span network information theory, FPGAs, and digital imaging devices and systems, resulting in the authorship and co-authorship of 230 papers and holding 35 patents. El Gamal is recognized for his significant contributions with awards such as the Richard W. Hamming Medal in 2016, the Claude E. Shannon Award in 2012, and the INFOCOM Paper Award in 2004. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the IEEE, and he has also co-founded and served on boards of various startups in the semiconductor and biotechnology sectors.
