Dr. Abbas Milani

Biography

Milani is a tenured Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he has held significant scholarly and administrative roles. He is the founding director of the UBC Materials Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) and the technical director of the Composites Research Network (CRN). His leadership extends to several key initiatives, including the Canadian-International Biocomposites Research Network and the NSERC CREATE Immersive Technologies program. Milani's expertise lies in advanced modeling, simulation, and multi-criteria design optimization of composite and biocomposite materials and manufacturing processes. His research contributions exceed 300 publications, including six books, with projects attracting more than $15 million in funding from both governmental and industrial organizations. He has successfully supervised over 100 students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have transitioned to successful careers in academia or the industrial sector. Milani has received numerous accolades, including the UBC Okanagan Researcher of the Year Award and the Killam Faculty Research Award, and he has been recognized for his teaching excellence and community contributions. In 2020, he was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada as part of its College of New Scholars, recognizing his role as an emerging leader in Canadian intellectual circles.
