Biography

Abbie J. Smith's research focuses on corporate governance and transparency, stimulated by heightened interest in issues resulting from accounting scandals such as Enron. Her work examines the 'CEO factor' and its effects on corporate behavior, including corporate reporting, insider trading, risk management, bankruptcy, financial performance, and social responsibility. Smith serves on the boards of directors for Ryder System, Inc., Dimensional Funds, and Chicago-based UBS Funds, and has participated in audit, compensation, finance, and governance committees. This board experience informs her perspective on business models, strategies, and the relationships between corporate investment, financing, reporting behavior, and academic research. She earned her bachelor's degree from the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University in 1975, followed by an MBA in 1979 and a PhD in accounting in 1981 from Cornell. She joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 1980 and has received several awards, including the Marvin Bower Fellowship and the McKinsey Award for Excellence in Teaching.
