Dr. Abbot Laptook

Biography

Abbot Laptook is a Professor Emeritus in Pediatrics at Brown University, focusing his research on the effects of insufficient oxygen (hypoxia) and blood flow (ischemia) on the brain of infants born at term and near term. This research is crucial as hypoxia-ischemia can lead to serious brain injuries that hinder normal brain development. His work primarily involves brain cooling as a potential therapeutic intervention. Laptook has served as Principal Investigator at the Brown site of the NICHD Neonatal Research Network, a consortium dedicated to testing vital clinical concepts across multiple neonatal centers. He has engaged in several pivotal clinical trials targeting therapeutic hypothermia practices in neonates, aiming to alleviate the impacts of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Besides these trials, his interests span understanding brain injury's pathogenesis, thermal regulation, and developing non-invasive methods to assess brain temperature.
