Biography

Professor Kavner has a diverse academic background in materials science and geophysics. She earned her BS in Materials Science Engineering from Northwestern University and later attended UC Berkeley for her MS in Materials Engineering, specializing in metallurgy and corrosion. She completed her PhD in Geophysics, focusing on high-pressure mineral physics, and spent five years as a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University’s Geoscience Department and at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University. Since joining UCLA in 2002, she has been involved in the Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences department and now aims to integrate her expertise in geoscience and materials science to address issues related to energy preservation and environmental sustainability. Her interests include running experiments in synchrotron facilities, teaching undergraduates in chemistry, and mentoring graduate students. She's heavily focused on understanding the properties of materials under extreme conditions and the applications of isotope electrochemistry.
