Dr. Abdulhamit Arvas

Biography

Abdulhamit Arvas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. His academic affiliations include Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies, Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, and the Middle East Center, among others. He specializes in early modern literature and culture with a focus on comparative histories of sexuality, race, queer studies, trans history, and cross-cultural encounters, particularly in the context of the Islamic Renaissance. His forthcoming book, 'Boys Abducted: Homoerotics, Empire, and Race in Early Modernity,' explores themes of gender and sexuality within transcultural contexts. Arvas has published in notable journals such as 'English Literary Renaissance' and 'Shakespeare Survey' and has co-edited a significant issue of 'postmedieval.' He has received multiple fellowships and awards, demonstrating excellence in teaching and research. Arvas completed his BA at Hacettepe University in Turkey, his MA at Eastern Michigan University, and his PhD in English at Michigan State University. He has previously held academic positions at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Vassar College, further contributing to his rich teaching portfolio.
