Biography

Abi Beane is a Reader in Critical Care Medicine and Health Systems Development at the University of Edinburgh. She aims to improve the care of critically ill patients globally by establishing mechanisms for continuous data-driven evaluation and evidence generation to facilitate practice changes in routine care. Her central work focuses on implementing and using components of learning health systems to generate data-driven research that addresses inequalities in critical care outcomes. Abi co-leads the Wellcome UKRI Collaboration Research and Implementation Training in Asia and Africa, working with research consortiums to develop and implement near real-time digital healthcare registries. This work involves conducting population health surveillance and interventional research in low- and middle-income countries. With a background as a critical care nurse, Abi has significant clinical experience with international organizations providing emergency surgical and medical care in conflict zones. She holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam, where her research concentrated on developing methodologies and implementing learning health systems in resource-constrained settings. Abi is also the co-founder of NICS MORU, a non-profit research unit in Sri Lanka that develops digital registries to enhance research capacity and facilitate data-driven service improvement across 17 countries internationally.
