Biography

Abigail Howe-Heyman is a passionate nurse educator, researcher, and midwife with over twenty years of experience in nursing education and a decade in midwifery. She is dedicated to helping students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to care for families throughout their lifespan, particularly during the life-changing childbearing period. Her research focuses on exploring the barriers to implementing evidence-based practices in perinatal settings of midwifery, emphasizing that learning occurs in diverse environments including hospitals, birth centers, homes, clinics, online platforms, libraries, labs, and classrooms. As a committed educator, she engages students in meaningful conversations and encourages them to consider differing opinions and ideas. Abigail teaches in the WHNP Midwifery programs at Penn Nursing, providing a participatory learning experience tailored to a diverse student body. Her clinical background includes positions at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, private practice in Brooklyn, NY, and as a sexual assault nurse examiner at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. In addition, Dr. Howe-Heyman serves as a consulting editor for the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health and has contributed to the upcoming 7th edition of Varney’s Midwifery.
