Dr. Abigail Weitzman

Biography

Abigail Weitzman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University. Her research interests include family dynamics, decision-making, migration, violence, and public policy. Dr. Weitzman is the founding Principal Investigator of the longitudinal study, Desplazado en Las Americas (DELAS), which investigates the health trajectories of migrants seeking international protection in Latin American contexts. Her work triangulates various methods, including Respondent Driven Sampling, panel surveys, in-depth interviews, and focus groups, to provide insights into the demographic phenomena linked to violence and migration. Additionally, Dr. Weitzman examines the evolution of immigrant policies in the United States and their implications for the largest ethnic minority, Latine populations. Her research has been funded by prestigious organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation, among others. In the classroom, she emphasizes professionalization and critical thinking, allowing students to choose their own research topics.
