Biography

Professor Wyner received Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics from Yale University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He was awarded the Stanley Prize for excellence in Mathematics. He earned his PhD in Statistics from Stanford University, during which he won the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship and the Abrams Prize from the Herz Foundation. After graduating, he received an NSF post-graduate fellowship and held a visiting Professorship at the University of California, Berkeley. For the past 11 years, Professor Wyner has been a tenured Professor and Chair of the Undergraduate Program in Statistics and Data Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an expert in Probability Models and Statistics with a focus on Applied Probability, Information Theory, and Statistical Learning. He has published over 30 articles in leading journals within fields such as Applied Statistics, Applied Probability, Finance, Information Theory, and Computer Science Bio-Informatics, and has received grants from the NSF, NIH, and private industry. Professor Wyner has consulted for various businesses, including being an early consultant for TiVo, Inc., where he aided in developing personalized software. He has created online data summarization tools and served as CTO of Surfnotes, Inc. He has also worked on statistical analyses for banks and marketing research firms, and has collaborated with ESPN on MLB player evaluation research.
