Biography

Abraham J. Wyner is a Professor of Statistics and the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Statistics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the Faculty Lead for the Wharton Sports Analytics Business Initiative. Professor Wyner's research encompasses a wide range of topics, including baseball analytics, boosting techniques, data compression, entropy, information theory, probabilistic modeling, and temperature reconstructions. As a prominent figure in the field, he has collaborated with ESPN on Major League Baseball (MLB) player evaluation research and has been involved in numerous consulting projects, including his early work with TiVo, Inc. and the development of online data summarization tools as Chief Technology Officer at Surfnotes, Inc. Professor Wyner earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Yale University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and went on to receive his PhD in Statistics from Stanford University, where he was awarded the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship and the Abrams Prize from the Herz Foundation. After completing his doctorate, he received an NSF post-graduate fellowship and held a visiting professorship at the University of California, Berkeley.
