Biography

Abtin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford. He graduated from the University of London, specifically Guy’s, King’s, and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, and completed his basic surgical training in the prestigious Hammersmith surgical rotation. He began his higher surgical training in Trauma Orthopaedics at the Oxford programme in 2008 and took several years to undertake his DPhil as an NIHR Biomedical Research Unit Fellow, focused on improving surgical learning performance in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. Abtin was appointed NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, achieving the status of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook additional post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships concentrating on complex hip and knee surgery at both the Oxford NOC and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). His clinical expertise includes unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, revision knee arthroplasty, and peri-prosthetic joint infection. His research addresses peri-prosthetic joint infection (PJI) as a significant complication in joint replacements, collaborating with leading experts to enhance diagnosis and management. He also investigates methods to improve surgical outcomes in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and develops simulation-based training methods for teaching and assessing surgical skills.
