Biography

A.T. (Ad) Vermeltfoort was born in Sint-Oedenrode in 1952. After primary school, despite advice to the contrary, he pursued vocational training (LTS) with aspirations of becoming a carpenter. He excelled and advanced to MTS, then HTS, where he studied civil engineering. After a brief marriage, Ad graduated from the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) after just three years and three months. His graduation project involved the design of a factory for ship diesel engines and experimental research on the rotational capacity of reinforced concrete beams. He later worked for Bureau Schiebroek Struik, focusing on building prefabricated concrete silos and making industrial buildings explosion-proof. In 1982, he became a lecturer in construction subjects at the Pedagogical Technical College of the Netherlands. His practical background proved beneficial in training teachers for vocational secondary education. He was seconded to the software development project (SWOP) for four years and contributed to educational resources, including material for the program PCFrame, well-known in the higher education sector. In 1990, he joined TU/e as a university lecturer. He served as rapporteur for CUR commission B50 in the early 90s and was involved in organizing the 13th International Brick Block Masonry conference in 2004. Besides teaching, Ad freelanced as an advisor for residential and commercial projects. His personal interests include cycling to work and learning about windmill operation.
